Dear New York Early Music* Artists and Presenters,

Early Music Foundation (EMF) is pleased to announce the fourth triennial NEW YORK EARLY MUSIC CELEBRATION scheduled to take place City-wide from October 4 through 20, 2013.

An EMF Service-to-the-Field project, the ‘Celebration’ is designed to showcase New York's 'historically-informed-performance' artists, ensembles and presenters. In 2010, Early Music Foundation and the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Departments of Concerts & Lectures & Musical Instruments combined resources to co-produce a day-long Early Music Festival. Previously, in 2004 and 2007, EMF organized City-wide early music Celebrations that initially spawned sixty-plus events, subsequently growing to more than ninety. EMF is now in the process of organizing its fourth triennial project.

This forthcoming event, as in 2004 and 2007, is open to all NYC historical performance artists/presenters and will include participation of select guest Polish early music artists. For this reason, Celebration marketing will be generously subsidized by EMF's 2013 project partner - the Polish Cultural Institute New York (PCI-NY). ‘Pro Musica Polonica’ is the 2013 Celebration sub-theme.

As in 2004 and 2007, we invite all historical performance artists, ensembles, and presenters to schedule opening season events during this time period. In turn, EMF/NYEMC will promote the Celebration 2013 as follows:
  • issue timely press releases to a comprehensive list of media contacts;
  • issue a mass-mailed piece announcing the Celebration dates and website;
  • display pertinent info about each participating artist on a new NYEMC website page (including artist's program content, photo, and website/box office link);
  • issue periodic mass e-blasts listing upcoming Celebration events;
  • print a pocket guide of all events to be available for distribution at all participant venues;
  • In addition, we have received an award from the West Harlem Local Development Corporation enabling EMF to help fund participant venue rental costs for activity taking place in the West Harlem (District 9 neighborhoods). Please contact the NYEMC office for details.

With partial marketing support for the overall Celebration provided by the Polish Cultural Institute and EMF's past experience in organizing and promoting previous Celebrations, we expect this fourth triennial endeavor will be a noteworthy event - an opportunity for the New York Early Music Community to reinforce its presence - qualitative and quantitative - on the NYC cultural scene. It will also be an opportunity for series presenting artists to introduce their full NYC concert season.

The sub-theme for this Celebration is intended to tap and expose Polish early music repertoire - a rich resource. Those New York early music artists who choose to present an all Polish program will be highlighted graphically in NYEMC printed materials and elsewhere as appropriate. Those artists who program some historical Polish compositions (or works by 'foreign' composers employed in Polish courts), will be similarly highlighted. We are working with the PWM Music Publishing Company (Krakow, Poland) that has published a large compendium of Polish early repertoire (medieval, Renaissance, baroque and classical). For those who wish repertoire assistance, we might suggest suitable Polish resources to the best of our ability. Programming of Polish and Polish-related repertoire is encouraged but not a proviso for Celebration inclusion.

New York’s historical performance artists and presenters are encouraged to continue using the NYEMC Staging Calendar as a reference and for posting & updating intentions as they materialize. We are pleased to respond to questions about Celebration 2013.

On behalf of EMF and PCI-NY, we look forward to your interest and positive response to this call.

Yours cordially and enthusiastically,

Frederick Renz

* “early music,” in the context of this Celebration, is defined as repertoire from the first written music through the year 1800, interpreted with adherence to historically informed performance practices.

A greeting from the EARLY MUSIC FOUNDATION and the POLISH CULTURAL INSTITUTE NY
